Warning: Major spoilers for Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge await ye, garrrrr… Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, AKA Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US, is now in cinemas and it's really rather good. As well as being the strongest sequel, Salazar's Revenge manages the fine balance of being both a soft reboot and a satisfying potential finale to the whole franchise. Box office figures aren't in as we write, but we're willing to go out on a limb and suggest it'll make a boatload of cash. So it would make no sense for Disney to park this beast just yet – here's what you can expect from Pirates going forward. Here's where everyone is now Deep breath... Here's where the main players are and who might return: JACK First and easiest is Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who, after five films' worth of curses, debts and narrow escapes, is, at the end of Salazar's Revenge, alive, well and in control of the Black Pearl. He's sailing off on new adventures with trusty first mate Gibbs (Kevin McNally).

We are free! " Huh? So, he and his ghostly seamen are able to escape the cave Jack trapped them in decades earlier and board and destroy other ships… But they're destroyed if they ever set foot on land. What? Why? Well, because an incoming double-cross wouldn't work if they could go on land, even though the treacherous character in question had no knowledge of the information on which said double-cross is dependent. Keeping up with the nonsensical plot lurches and inconsistencies is exhausting. And even the once-reliable Johnny can't distract us like he used to. Jack's shtick has consumed the character. Where once he was an engaging oddity whose unhinged mannerisms you felt cloaked hidden (and sober) depths, Jack now feels like a routine rather than a person. Where his soul once dwelled, we find only backstory — executed with some horribly uncanny valley de-aging CGI work on Depp's face, and one supremely pointless revelation. Ever wonder why he's called "Sparrow"? Us neither. Not the return to form you might have been hoping for.
Perhaps the discovery of her heritage – namely that's she's Barbossa's daughter, could provide some motivation? Maybe she'll even find a way to bring daddy back from the dead? Of course, Barbossa has returned from the dead before in Dead Man's Chest, so it's not necessarily the end for him. Stranger things have happened at sea. Or maybe she'll join forces with Jack, and ditch boring old Henry. After all, Jack even hints to Gibbs in the final shot that he's going to use the stars to find new treasure, so who better than Carina to be the Black Pearl's navigator? It'd be a way to keep the spirit of Barbossa around. THOSE OTHER ONES As for the people we met during On Stranger Tides, it seems that Disney has pretty much forgotten them. Philip (Sam Claflin) and Syrena (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey) are presumably still happily in love in the ocean, while Angelica (Penelope Cruz) is still stranded on that island and Blackbeard (Ian McShane) is dead thanks to the Fountain of Youth. Ironic, that. The post-credits sequence Having been reunited at the end of the movie, we see Will and Elizabeth sleeping peacefully in their home, before Davy Jones – or his claw, at least – creeps into the room.

T he test for Rønning and Sandberg – a Norwegian duo whose previous film, the 2012 seafaring adventure Kon-Tiki, was nominated for a foreign-language Oscar – is that the original Pirates film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, came out in 2003, so the short-circuit shock of nostalgia could have never been as potent here as it was in, say, Jurassic World, let alone Star Wars: The Force Awakens. T here's no question they've recaptured, or at least synthesised, some of the essence of the original Gore Verbinski film. But the gonzo-Wagnerian backstory the franchise subsequently built up hasn't been sufficiently pruned – and with so many characters to juggle, the story feels less like a coherent chain of events than a bundle of obligatory subplots. And action sequences, of course, two of which really click. In an early bank heist, Sparrow and his cronies make off with the bank itself, while a terrific mid-film escape from a public execution unfolds in a kind of whirring, clockwork frenzy, and takes in some ingenious business with a spinning guillotine and the unimprovable, Laurel and Hardy-calibre line: "I'm not one to complain normally, but this basket is full of heads. "
