One of the best movie I have seen in years. Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020 Verified Purchase Coach Carter was based upon a true story of a high school basketball coach in Richmond, California a city I grew up in. It was a typical inner city story of kids in a rough neighborhood who had to be worked into shape by a tough coach. He teaches them fundamentals of basketball, what it means to be a team, to take academics seriously, etc. This is the kind of role that Samuel L. Jackson excels at. He gets to act tough with an attitude and do a bunch of yelling. At the same time he has a heart and cares about his players. The highlight turns out to be when he forfeits games and ends practices until the kids can get their grades up. That leads to a confrontation with the principal and the school board who feel that sports is more important than academics. The movie is predictable but still enjoyable. Surprisingly there's not that much basketball action because the story is about all the stuff that happens off the court.

It was recommended to me by my daughter. She, like me, had seen similar films about coaches and their influence on their teams. A long time ago we saw a film with Denzel Washington. That film was mainly about the race one with Samuel J Jackson is about the interaction between players, their parents and the coach. Samuel Jackson is formidable as the the demanding, but fair, coach and the end result is good.

HALLELUJAH FOR THIS FILM!! Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017 Verified Purchase My son wanted to watch this with us. It is a great movie about rising above not only your circumstances but also expectations. Our lives are about choices. That sounds cliche' I know, and choices can be incredibly hard. But. We CAN change the course of our lives and the lives of others. Any movie that can inspire that in our youth, is worth watching. My 17 year old son loves this movie. Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2016 Verified Purchase This is a great movie showing the influence of a strong coach. Coach Carter was brought in to turn a basketball team to win. Little did the team know that Coach Carter was going to stick with his standards, and when the basketball team realizes that they actually have to attend class, it is a "wake up call" to both the students and the parents. We need more Coach Carters in our schools. Excellent movie and well written. Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2019 Verified Purchase Tuff coach whom provided an excellent father figure to some unruly high school boys.
Something went wrong, but don't fret — let's give it another shot.
Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2012 Verified Purchase Every school administrator and school board should be required to watch this film and abide by its precepts. Including the collegiate level... Jackson does a tremendous, tremendous job in this. As a parent and teacher, and citizen, I have been screaming this message for decades! As Educators, what message are we sending these kids when we allow them to graduate high school without even being able to read??? But, they can darned sure throw a football. Look at the "heroes" now - many are nothing more than high-priced criminals. We glorify bad, deviant, and criminal behavior, and we have sold the soul of this country for a bloody buck. At least SOMEBODY, even if only in film, has the guts to make an UNCOMPROMISING, UN-RATIONALIZING, stand against it. I am so pleased to know that this story is based on actual events. That the kids, in the end, made their own right choice not to play in the tournament unless they got their academics in line.
Are we clear? Crazy Credits During the opening credits there is the sound of dribbling and there are streaks where the cast members are shown.
