This was written to be my second feature lm with Ellen Ramos after Ilusyon back in 2005, but was shelved for logistical reasons. Even though this sounds dramatic, I think the delay was destined — for me to gain maturity as a storyteller and for fate to assemble the right cast for such an ensemble piece. Incidentally, the actor who plays Jesus, is named Jesus (Jess) Mendoza in real life. Shot on location in the the heart of Sampaloc, Recto, and Sta. Mesa in Manila, cast and crew labored in unforgiving humidity and cramped spaces. Along with Pepe's family, we welcomed the open roads of Antipolo and Rodriguez, Rizal. We all looked forward to reaching the "farm" – our elusive paradise, an imagined utopia. There were the perennial challenges for Ellen and I in sourcing enough funds to bring the script to life, to be able to use professional equipment and services, pay cast and crew the right professional fees, and not to shoot beyond midnight. Budget for just one more shooting day would have allowed more opportunities to immerse in the scenes and expand cinematic possibilities.

The acclaimed tandem of Villaluna-Ramos also co-wrote and co-edited the film which was executive produced by ToFarm matriarch Dr. Milagros How. The film was selected in the main competition of the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival where it won the Golden Goblet in Best Feature Film. Its win makes it only the 5th Phillippine film in local cinema history to win the top prize in an A-List international film festival. It has an ensemble cast led by Philippine icons Bembol Roco and Cherry Pie Picache.

Budget for just one more shooting day would have allowed more opportunities to immerse in the scenes and expand cinematic possibilities. On our last shooting day, we traveled two hours to shoot a perfect sunset moment. It suddenly rained, and we can only quietly gaze at the setting sun, waiting for the clouds to clear - as if the sky is saying, look at me first with eyes wide open. A rainbow appeared, its end a few meters away. We hoped that there will be a pot of gold. We only had 5 minutes to shoot before the sky darkens. Each shooting day tested our resolve to continue with the journey. - Paolo Villaluna See more » Details Release Date: 13 July 2016 (Philippines) See more » Company Credits Technical Specs See full technical specs » Prime Video has you covered this holiday season with movies for the family. Follow a pedicab driver, a thief, a laundrywoman, a dog, a blind pregnant woman and Jesus Christ – shod in basketball sneakers – as they make their way from poverty in the city to the imagined paradise of the countryside. Inspired by a news article featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer ("Family pedals way back home to Leyte, " Sept. 7, 2003), Pauwi Na (PEDICAB) follows Mang Pepe and his family as they pedal on pedicabs (cycle rickshaws) the thousands of miles from Manila to the farmlands. The ailing Mang Pepe, his wife, Remedios, their daughter Pina, their son JP, his wife Isabel and their dog Kikay live together in a shanty in the slums. Survival is hand-to-mouth. Mang Pepe drives his rusting pedicab to deliver goods to the market. Aling Remedios washes laundry for her neighbors. JP steals, Pina sells cigarettes, and Isabel, blind and soon to give birth, believes she can see and speak to Jesus Christ.
